Insider Tips for Successfully Verifying Your Google Business Profile

Getting a Google Business Profile verified can sometimes be frustrating, especially for service-area businesses, home-based companies, and businesses that do not operate from a traditional storefront.

Fortunately, Google Business Profile Product Experts have shared several practical tips that can improve the chances of a successful verification—particularly when Google asks for a video.

As a Grow with Google partner, the West Geauga Chamber of Commerce is pleased to share these recommendations with local businesses looking to strengthen their visibility on Google Search and Maps.

Get Everything Ready Before You Record

One of the most important recommendations is to make sure the information in your Google Business Profile matches the real-world details of your business.

Before recording your verification video, confirm that your:

  • Business name

  • Service area

  • Phone number

  • Business category

are consistent with your physical branding, licenses, invoices, and other business documentation.

It is also a good idea to have vehicles unlocked, tools accessible, and paperwork ready before you begin recording. Preparing in advance can help you avoid interruptions and make the verification process smoother.

Record One Continuous Video

Google’s verification process is designed to confirm that the business is legitimate and that the person recording has a real connection to the operation.

For that reason, your verification video should generally be recorded as one continuous, unedited take.

Turn on your device’s location services and begin recording within your actual service area or at your business location. Avoid pausing the recording or editing clips together.

Your video should show enough context to establish where you are and demonstrate that the business operates in that area.

For service-area businesses, that might include showing nearby streets, work vehicles, tools, equipment, branding, or documentation.

For certain businesses, it may also make sense to record while actively working at a legitimate customer or job location, while still being careful to protect customer privacy.

Make the Video Tell a Clear Story

One useful way to approach your verification video is to think of it as a simple sequence:

Location → Business vehicle or tools → Business documentation

That progression helps Google see that you are operating in the claimed area, have the equipment or resources associated with the business, and can demonstrate legitimate business activity.

The goal is not to create a marketing video. Instead, you are documenting real evidence that connects you to the business you are trying to verify.

Protect Customer and Residential Privacy

While showing authentic business activity is important, privacy should always be considered.

Businesses operating from a home should avoid unnecessarily displaying a residential address, particularly if the business does not serve customers at that location.

You should also avoid:

  • Showing private customer documents

  • Displaying sensitive contact information

  • Revealing payment information

  • Filming customers or bystanders unnecessarily

  • Showing another business’s private information

If documentation contains confidential information, keep sensitive portions out of view while still showing enough information to establish the legitimacy of the business.

Do Not Try to Make a Home Look Like a Storefront

Businesses without a storefront should not attempt to create the appearance of one simply for the purpose of verification.

For example, temporarily placing signs outside a home to make it appear that customers regularly visit the location can create problems rather than helping the verification process.

Instead, focus on accurately representing how the business actually operates.

A legitimate service-area company can demonstrate its business through its vehicle, tools, equipment, invoices, licenses, uniforms, branding, and other real-world evidence without needing a traditional retail location.

What If Your Verification Is Still Rejected?

Even with careful preparation, verification does not always succeed on the first attempt.

If you continue to experience problems, Google provides support resources through the Google Business Profile Help Center. Businesses may also be able to request a live video verification with Google support in certain situations.

The official Google Business Profile Community can also be a valuable resource, with experienced Product Experts helping businesses troubleshoot common verification problems.

Why Verification Is Worth the Effort

A verified Google Business Profile allows businesses to better manage how they appear across Google Search and Google Maps.

Once verified, businesses can manage important information such as:

  • Hours

  • Contact information

  • Service areas

  • Photos

  • Customer reviews

  • Business updates

  • Products and services

For many local businesses, a Google Business Profile is one of the most visible parts of their online presence. Taking the time to complete verification properly can make it easier for potential customers to discover and contact your company.
